{"id":385,"date":"2021-10-13T19:34:43","date_gmt":"2021-10-13T19:34:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.webalgerie.net\/?p=385"},"modified":"2023-05-23T19:55:47","modified_gmt":"2023-05-23T19:55:47","slug":"installation-of-ubuntu-20-04-lts-desktop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.webalgerie.net\/?p=385","title":{"rendered":"Installation of Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Desktop"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1.<\/strong> Once you have obtained the <strong>Ubuntu 20.04<\/strong> desktop image, create a bootable media using <strong>Rufus<\/strong> tool or create a bootable USB drive using LiveUSB Creator called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tecmint.com\/install-linux-from-usb-device\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Unetbootin<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2.<\/strong> Next, insert the bootable <strong>DVD<\/strong> or <strong>USB<\/strong> into the appropriate drive on your machine. Then start the computer and instruct the <strong>BIOS<\/strong> by pressing a special function key (<code>F2<\/code>, <code>F8<\/code>, <code>F9<\/code> or <code>F10<\/code>, <code>F11<\/code>, <code>F12<\/code>) to boot-up from the inserted USB\/CD drive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once the <strong>BIOS<\/strong> detects the bootable media, it boots from it. After a successful boot, the installer will check your disk (file system), press <code>Ctrl+C<\/code> to skip this process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tecmint.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Ubuntu-checking-disk.png\" alt=\"Checking Ubuntu Disk\" class=\"wp-image-36992\" width=\"794\" height=\"594\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3.<\/strong> When disk checking is complete or if you have canceled it, after a few seconds, you should see the <strong>Ubuntu 20.04<\/strong> welcome page as shown in the following screenshot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Select <strong>Install Ubuntu<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tecmint.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/select-install-ubuntu.png\" alt=\"Select Install Ubuntu\" class=\"wp-image-36993\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>4.<\/strong> Next, choose your <strong>keyboard<\/strong> layout and click <strong>Continue<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tecmint.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/select-your-keyboard-layout.png\" alt=\"Select Keyboard Layout\" class=\"wp-image-36994\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>5.<\/strong> After that, choose the apps you want to install based on the installation type (normal or minimal installation). Also, check the option to install updates during the installation process and where to install third-party software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tecmint.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/choose-installation-type-and-software-to-upload.png\" alt=\"Choose Ubuntu Installation Type\" class=\"wp-image-36995\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>6.<\/strong> Now choose the actual installation type. This is normally the most confusing part, especially for new Linux users. There are two scenarios we will consider here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First is using an unpartitioned hard drive with no operating system installed. Then secondly, we will also consider how to install on an already partitioned hard drive (with an existing OS e.g <strong>Ubuntu 18.04<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Scenario 1: Using an Unpartitioned Harddrive (without an OS installed)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>7.<\/strong> For this scenario, you need to set up partitions manually so choose <strong>Something else<\/strong> and click <strong>Continue<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tecmint.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/choose-actual-installation-type.png\" alt=\"Choose Ubuntu Installation Type\" class=\"wp-image-36996\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>8.<\/strong> Now you need to partition your hard drive for the installation. Simply select\/click on the unpartitioned storage device from the list of available storage devices. Then click <strong>New Partition Table<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Note that the installer will auto-select the device on which the boot-loader will be installed as shown in the following screenshot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tecmint.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/select-unpartitioned-storage-device.png\" alt=\"Create New Partition Table\" class=\"wp-image-36997\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>9.<\/strong> Next, click <strong>Continue<\/strong> from the pop-up window to create an empty partition table on the device.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tecmint.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/create-new-empty-partition-table-on-device.png\" alt=\"Create New Empty Partition Table\" class=\"wp-image-36998\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>10.<\/strong> Now you should be able to see the free space created equivalent to the capacity of the hard drive. Double click on the free space to create a partition as described next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tecmint.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/free-space-created.png\" alt=\"Free Space for Ubuntu Installation\" class=\"wp-image-36999\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>11.<\/strong> To create a <code>root(\/)<\/code> partition (where the base system files will be installed), enter the size of the new partition out of the total free space. Then set the file system type to <strong>EXT4<\/strong> and the mount point to <code>\/<\/code> from the drop-down list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tecmint.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/create-root-partition.png\" alt=\"Create Root Partition\" class=\"wp-image-37000\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>12.<\/strong> Now the new partition should appear in the list of partition as shown in the next screenshot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tecmint.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/new-root-partition-created.png\" alt=\"New Ubuntu Partition Table\" class=\"wp-image-37001\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>13.<\/strong> Next, you need to create a <strong>swap<\/strong> partition\/area. Double click on the current free space to create a new partition to be used as swap area. Then enter the swap <strong>partition size<\/strong> and set <strong>swap area<\/strong> as shown in the following screenshot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tecmint.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/create-swap-partition.png\" alt=\"Create Swap Partition\" class=\"wp-image-37002\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>14.<\/strong> At this point, you should see two partitions created, the root partition and the swap partition. Next, click <strong>Install Now<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tecmint.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/partitions-created-successfully.png\" alt=\"Ubuntu Partitions\" class=\"wp-image-37003\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>15.<\/strong> You will be prompted to permit the installer to write the recent changes concerning partitioning to disk. Click <strong>Continue<\/strong> to proceed.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tecmint.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/write-changes-to-disk.png\" alt=\"Write Changes to Disk\" class=\"wp-image-37004\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Scenario 2: Using an Already Partitioned Harddrive (with an existing OS installed)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><strong>16.<\/strong> For this scenario, you will use the existing partitions, choose <strong>Something<\/strong> else and click <strong>Continue<\/strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tecmint.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/choose-something-scenarios2.png\" alt=\"Choose Installation Type\" class=\"wp-image-37005\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>17.<\/strong> Then you should see your existing partitions for example, as shown in the following screenshot. Double click on the partition with the previous OS installation,<strong> Ubuntu 18.04<\/strong> in our case.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tecmint.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/existing-partitions-scenarios2.png\" alt=\"Existing Ubuntu Partition Table\" class=\"wp-image-37006\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>18.<\/strong> Next, edit the partition and set the file system size, file system type to <strong>Ext4<\/strong>, and then check the format option and set the mount point to <code>root(\/)<\/code>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tecmint.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/edit-partition-to-create-root-partition-scenaio2.png\" alt=\"Edit Partition for Ubuntu Installation\" class=\"wp-image-37008\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>19.<\/strong> Accept the changes in the hard drive partition table, in the next pop-up window by clicking <strong>Continue<\/strong>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tecmint.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/accept-partition-changes-scenario2.png\" alt=\"Accept Partition Changes\" class=\"wp-image-37009\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>20.<\/strong> Now you should have a <strong>root<\/strong> and <strong>swap<\/strong> partition as shown in the following screenshot. Note that the swap partition will be auto-detected by the installer. So click <strong>Install Now<\/strong> to proceed.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tecmint.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/partitions-created-successfully-scenario2.png\" alt=\"Ubuntu Partition Table\" class=\"wp-image-37010\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>21.<\/strong> Next, select your <strong>location<\/strong> and click <strong>Continue<\/strong>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tecmint.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/select-current-location.png\" alt=\"Select Current Location\" class=\"wp-image-37011\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>22.<\/strong> Then provide your user details for system account creation. Enter your full name, computer name and username, and a strong, secure password as shown in the following screenshot. Then click Continue.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tecmint.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/enter-user-details.png\" alt=\"Create User\" class=\"wp-image-37012\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>23.<\/strong> Now the actual base system installation will begin as shown in the following screenshot. Wait for it to finish.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tecmint.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/base-system-installation-underway.png\" alt=\"Ubuntu Base System Installation\" class=\"wp-image-37013\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>24.<\/strong> Once the system installation is complete, <strong>reboot<\/strong> your system by clicking <strong>Restart Now<\/strong>.
